During the summer vacation of 2025, the "Elegant Charm Dyes the Nine Provinces, Cultural Heritage Nourishes Yunnan and Sichuan" practice team from the School of Humanities and Media of Nanjing Normal University Taizhou College visited the Suzhou Silk Museum and carried out a practical activity themed on exploring silk culture. The practice team members, filled with curiosity and respect for the ancient silk craftsmanship, hope to uncover the cultural gene code contained in the silk craftsmanship through observing exhibits, experiencing the techniques, and collecting historical materials, explore its contemporary inheritance path, and feel the unique charm of this craftsmanship flowing in the cultural vein of Jiangnan.
Entering the exhibition hall of the Suzhou Silk Museum, a restored Song Dynasty flower-patterned loom first caught the eyes of the practice team members. It stands quietly. On the brown wooden frame, thousands of silk threads cascade down like waterfalls. Under the illumination of the light, the interwoven patterns of the warp and weft threads glimmer faintly, as if silently telling the story of the hustle and bustle and glory of the loom a thousand years ago. In the glass display case beside it, a piece of purple-brown gauze from the Southern Song Dynasty is spread out flat, with fine and dense mesh like a net. Staff members of the Suzhou Silk Museum introduced that, as measured by modern instruments, there are as many as 144 warp threads per square centimeter in this piece of gauze. Such a high level of craftsmanship precision requires specially designed equipment even in today's technologically advanced era. After observing, Wang, a member of the practice team, said, "Seeing such precision in craftsmanship, it's really hard to imagine how ancient artisans accomplished it by hand. Their skills are truly admirable."
Continuing along the exhibition hall, the practice team members arrived at the display area of Qing Dynasty embroidered cloud shoulders. These colorful embroidered cloud shoulders have unique designs, made up of delicate petal-shaped pieces, exuding a distinctive charm. Upon closer inspection, the embroidery is extremely delicate, with a rich variety of stitches. The color combinations of the silk threads are harmonious and full of layers. Each flower pattern seems about to bloom, vividly lifelike. The staff in the museum introduced to the practice team members that in the Qing Dynasty, cloud shoulders were not only decorative clothing but also a symbol of status and position. Cloud shoulders of different styles and embroidery techniques would appear in various ceremonial occasions. These colorful embroidered cloud shoulders, with their exquisite craftsmanship, carry the unique clothing culture and aesthetic trends of the Qing Dynasty, allowing us to deeply appreciate the significant position of silk in ancient social life. Han, the captain of the practice team, said.
The words on the exhibition hall's information board, "The beauty of silk lies in weaving the toughest texture with the softest fibers," attracted the practice team members to further explore the unique qualities of silk from different dynasties. The team members noticed that the Tang Dynasty's bead-patterned brocade was passionate and unrestrained, and the Baxiang flower pattern still bore the influence of Western Regions culture, highlighting the open and inclusive spirit of the Tang Dynasty's prosperous era. The decorative brocade of the Ming Dynasty was elegant and reserved. The lotus patterns meandered and spread out on the dark blue background, just like the winding corridors in the Jiangnan gardens, fully demonstrating the aesthetic taste of scholars and literati. In the Qing Dynasty dragon robe exhibition area, a stone blue satin embroidered twelve-chapter pattern auspicious robe is particularly eye-catching. The dragon patterns embroidered with gold thread will change to different lusters when the light moves. The staff member pointed at this auspicious suit and introduced that upon closer inspection, it would be found that each golden thread was actually made by winding dozens of silk threads. The complexity of the craftsmanship and the exquisite workmanship were truly breathtaking. After careful observation, Zhang, a member of the practice team, said, "Such craftsmanship details make one can't help but marvel at the ingenuity of ancient artisans and also give us a deeper understanding of silk culture."
Moving from the ancient silk fabric display area to the interactive experience zone, the practice team members were given a rare opportunity for hands-on experience. Here, they attempt to complete the simplest plain stitch embroidery with embroidery needles. When the silver needle at the tip of the finger passed through the satin, everyone truly realized that what seemed like an easy puncture actually required precise control of the force - applying too much force would tangle the silk thread, while applying too little force would cause the thread to float on the surface. The half-hour experience gave the team members a direct understanding of the saying that "a single thread can be split into one forty-eighth." Student Li, a member of the practice team, shared, "Only after experiencing it myself did I realize that every small step in the silk-making process requires great patience and skill. The delicacy and toughness of silk are truly amazing, and this also reminds me of the gentle yet firm trait in Jiangnan culture."
